Amjad Khan

Amjad Khan was a legendary Indian actor and director, best remembered for his unforgettable portrayal of the dacoit Gabbar Singh in the iconic film Sholay (1975). Born on November 12, 1940, in Hyderabad, India, Amjad was the son of veteran actor Jayant (Zakaria Khan). He grew up in a film-centric environment that nurtured his interest in cinema from an early age. He completed his education at St. Andrew’s High School in Bandra, Mumbai, and later graduated from R.D. National College. Initially dabbling in theater and minor film roles, Amjad’s true breakthrough came when director Ramesh Sippy cast him as the fearsome antagonist Gabbar Singh. His delivery of lines like “Kitne aadmi the?” etched his name into Bollywood history, forever altering the way villains were portrayed on screen.

Following Sholay, Amjad Khan became a staple in Hindi cinema, often cast in villainous or authoritative roles, though he also showcased his versatility in comic and dramatic performances. Films such as Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978), Laawaris (1981), Yaarana (1981), Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986), and Satte Pe Satta (1982) further demonstrated his immense range and talent. Despite his imposing on-screen persona, those who knew him personally described him as a gentle, well-read, and witty individual. He also tried his hand at directing with the film Chor Police in 1983.

Beyond acting, Amjad Khan was deeply involved in social causes and even served as the President of the Actors’ Guild for a time. In 1976, he married Shehla Khan, and the couple had three children, including actor Shadaab Khan. Tragically, Amjad Khan’s life was cut short when he passed away due to heart failure on July 27, 1992, at the age of 51. Despite his untimely death, his legacy lives on, particularly through Gabbar Singh — a role so powerful that it continues to influence Indian pop culture decades later. Amjad Khan remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic and respected actors, revered for his commanding screen presence, deep voice, and nuanced acting.
