Mohanlal

Mohanlal Viswanathan, popularly known simply as Mohanlal, is one of the most iconic and versatile actors in Indian cinema. Born on May 21, 1960, in Elanthoor, Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, India, he has carved a unique space in the Malayalam film industry and across Indian cinema through his natural acting style, expressive performances, and immense dedication to his craft.

Mohanlal made his cinematic debut in 1978 with the film Thiranottam, but the movie was delayed in release. His first released film was Manjil Virinja Pookkal (1980), in which he played a villain. His portrayal impressed audiences and critics alike, paving the way for a prolific career that has spanned over four decades. Over the years, Mohanlal evolved from playing negative characters to becoming a celebrated hero and an actor capable of portraying any role with authenticity.

A master of subtlety, Mohanlal is revered for his ability to transform into a wide array of characters—from action heroes to emotional family men and from comic roles to deeply philosophical characters. Some of his most acclaimed films include Kireedam, Bharatham, Vanaprastham, Drishyam, Spadikam, Iruvar, and Pulimurugan. His role in Drishyam and its sequel received nationwide acclaim and were remade in multiple Indian languages.

Mohanlal is not just an actor but also a producer, playback singer, and occasional writer. He founded his production company Pranavam Arts and has produced many acclaimed films. In addition, he holds a black belt in Taekwondo and is the first South Indian actor to be honored with a Lieutenant Colonel title in the Indian Territorial Army (2009), recognizing his patriotism and contributions to cinema.

Throughout his illustrious career, Mohanlal has received numerous awards, including five National Film Awards, nine Kerala State Film Awards, and Filmfare Awards South. In 2001, he was awarded the Padma Shri, and in 2019, he was conferred with the Padma Bhushan, two of India’s highest civilian honors.

Despite his massive fame, Mohanlal remains grounded and respected for his humility. He is also actively involved in social work, charitable activities, and public awareness campaigns. His contribution to Indian cinema remains unmatched, and he continues to be a source of inspiration for generations of actors.
