Sanjay Dutt

Sanjay Dutt, one of Bollywood’s most iconic and controversial actors, was born on July 29, 1959, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He hails from a prestigious film family—his father, Sunil Dutt, was a legendary actor and politician, and his mother, Nargis Dutt, was a celebrated actress known for her roles in classic Hindi cinema. Growing up in the limelight, Sanjay was exposed to the glamorous yet demanding world of film from a very young age. However, his journey in the industry has been anything but smooth, marked by incredible highs and deeply personal and legal struggles.

Sanjay made his acting debut in 1981 with the film Rocky, directed by his father. The movie was a commercial success and established him as a promising newcomer. Unfortunately, shortly before the film’s release, his mother Nargis passed away due to cancer, a loss that deeply affected him and reportedly contributed to his descent into drug addiction. In the early 1980s, Sanjay battled a severe drug problem and eventually underwent rehabilitation in the United States. His courage to speak openly about his addiction later earned him respect and admiration, especially from fans struggling with similar issues.

In the 1990s, Sanjay Dutt’s career saw a major resurgence with films like Saajan (1991), Khalnayak (1993), and Vaastav (1999), the latter earning him a Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Known for his rugged charm and intense screen presence, he excelled in roles that required emotional depth, toughness, and vulnerability. However, just as his career was soaring, he faced one of the darkest chapters of his life. In 1993, he was arrested under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) for illegal possession of firearms linked to the Mumbai serial blasts. This led to years of court trials, jail time, and a constant media spotlight.

Despite the legal troubles, Sanjay continued working and delivered some of his most iconic performances during this period, including in the Munna Bhai series, where his role as a kind-hearted gangster with a message of Gandhigiri won the hearts of millions. Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003) and its sequel Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006) not only became cultural landmarks but also redefined his public image.

After years of legal battles, he was sentenced in 2013 and served time in Pune’s Yerwada Central Jail, from where he was released in 2016. Upon release, Sanjay resumed his acting career, appearing in films like Bhoomi (2017), Kalank (2019), Sadak 2 (2020), and K.G.F: Chapter 2 (2022), where he played the menacing antagonist Adheera. His presence in the latter film marked a strong comeback, solidifying his reputation as a versatile actor capable of portraying both hero and villain with conviction.

Apart from acting, Sanjay Dutt has dabbled in film production and owns a production company, Sanjay Dutt Productions. He has been married three times and is currently married to Manyata Dutt, with whom he has twins. His life story, marked by fame, downfall, redemption, and resilience, was also adapted into a biopic titled Sanju (2018), directed by Rajkumar Hirani and starring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. The film was a major box-office success and offered insight into his tumultuous journey.
