SJ Suryah

SJ Suryah is a multifaceted Indian actor, director, screenwriter, producer, and composer who has left a significant imprint on Tamil cinema with his unique blend of creativity, innovation, and eccentricity. Born as S. Justin Selvaraj on July 20, 1968, in Valliyur, Tamil Nadu, he initially pursued a conventional academic path, graduating in Physics before chasing his dreams in the film industry. His early years in Chennai were marked by relentless struggle, working in various assistant director roles while also harboring aspirations to act.

Suryah made a sensational directorial debut with the 1999 film “Vaali”, starring Ajith Kumar in dual roles, which became a massive commercial and critical success. This film established him as a visionary director with a flair for storytelling that balances commercial appeal with psychological depth. His next directorial ventures, including “Kushi” (2000) featuring Vijay and Jyothika, and “New” (2004) in which he also debuted as a lead actor, further cemented his reputation. While “New” was controversial for its adult themes, it showcased his audacity and boundary-pushing style. As an actor, Suryah continued to surprise audiences with films like “Anbe Aaruyire” and “Isai”, the latter marking his return after a hiatus and also doubling as a composer.

Though often seen as unconventional, SJ Suryah has proven himself to be a powerful performer, especially with critically acclaimed roles in “Iraivi” (2016) directed by Karthik Subbaraj, and “Spyder” (2017) where he played the antagonist opposite Mahesh Babu.
