Dean DeBlois

Dean DeBlois is a celebrated Canadian filmmaker, screenwriter, and animator, best known for his work on the acclaimed How to Train Your Dragon trilogy. Born on June 7, 1970, in Aylmer, Quebec, Canada, DeBlois showed an early interest in storytelling and visual art, which led him to pursue animation studies at Sheridan College in Ontario. After graduating, he began his career at Hinton Animation Studios and then moved on to Sullivan Bluth Studios in Ireland, where he worked on Thumbelina and A Troll in Central Park. His talents quickly earned him a place at Walt Disney Feature Animation in the mid-1990s.

At Disney, DeBlois made a significant mark co-writing and co-directing Lilo & Stitch (2002) with longtime collaborator Chris Sanders. The film was both a critical and commercial success, praised for its emotional depth, unique style, and cultural representation of Hawaii. The success of Lilo & Stitch positioned DeBlois as a strong creative force in animation, someone who could blend humor, heart, and originality.

In the late 2000s, DeBlois reunited with Sanders to rework and eventually co-direct How to Train Your Dragon (2010) at DreamWorks Animation. The film became a massive success, leading to two sequels: How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019). Notably, DeBlois directed and wrote all three films, shaping them into a rare animated trilogy praised for its consistent quality, character growth, and emotional storytelling. The franchise garnered several Academy Award nominations and helped redefine modern animated epics.

Outside of animation, DeBlois has explored live-action and documentary filmmaking. He directed the rock documentary Heima (2007) about the Icelandic band Sigur Rós, showcasing his deep love for Icelandic culture and music, a recurring influence in his work. DeBlois has also been attached to live-action projects with major studios, including a live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, expected to be released in 2025, with DeBlois returning as writer and director.
