Neeraj Pandey is one of India’s most acclaimed filmmakers, celebrated for his gripping storytelling, intelligent screenwriting, and impactful direction. Born on December 17, 1973, in Howrah, West Bengal, he hails from a middle-class family originally from Arrah, Bihar. A graduate in English Literature from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, Pandey later moved to Delhi and then Mumbai to pursue a career in media and film. Before stepping into Bollywood, he worked in television and documentaries, gaining valuable experience that shaped his cinematic voice.

Pandey made a groundbreaking debut with A Wednesday! (2008), a low-budget thriller that earned critical acclaim for its taut narrative and social relevance. The film starred Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher and was hailed as one of the finest thrillers in modern Hindi cinema. The success of A Wednesday! not only earned him the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director at the National Film Awards but also established him as a director with a unique vision.

Following this, Neeraj delivered a string of commercially and critically successful films such as Special 26 (2013), Baby (2015), and M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016), which showcased his versatility in handling different genres—from heist and espionage thrillers to biographical drama. His storytelling style often revolves around real events, sharp dialogues, patriotism, and morally complex characters. Pandey’s narrative sensibility is distinct—grounded yet cinematic, cerebral yet emotionally charged.

In addition to directing, Neeraj has also ventured into production through his banner Friday Filmworks, co-founded with Shital Bhatia. The company has backed several noteworthy projects across films and web series, including Naam Shabana, Aiyaary, and the espionage thriller web series Special OPS, which was released on Disney+ Hotstar in 2020 and became a massive hit. Pandey has also written several of his films, further showcasing his multifaceted talent.
