Raj Kumar Gupta is an acclaimed Indian film director and screenwriter best known for his hard-hitting storytelling and unflinching approach to socio-political subjects in Bollywood cinema. Born and raised in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, Gupta developed a passion for cinema early on, inspired by classic Hindi films and the works of renowned directors. He completed his education at Delhi University before pursuing filmmaking at the prestigious National School of Drama and the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), where he honed his craft in direction and screenplay writing.

Raj Kumar Gupta made a powerful directorial debut with Aamir (2008), a taut thriller exploring terrorism and individual moral dilemmas, starring Rajeev Khandelwal. The film was praised for its gripping narrative and urban realism, instantly marking Gupta as a director unafraid to tackle bold themes. He cemented his reputation with No One Killed Jessica (2011), based on the high-profile Jessica Lal murder case. The film, starring Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji, was both a critical and commercial success, earning acclaim for its raw portrayal of corruption, media activism, and the fight for justice.

Continuing his exploration of socially relevant themes, Gupta directed Ghanchakkar (2013), a dark comedy featuring Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan, showcasing his versatility in blending genres. In 2018, he delivered Raid, a period crime drama starring Ajay Devgn and Ileana D’Cruz, revolving around one of India’s longest income tax raids. The film was a box-office hit and lauded for its tight screenplay and realistic depiction of bureaucratic heroism. Gupta’s next venture, India’s Most Wanted (2019), inspired by true events, followed a covert mission to capture one of India’s most dangerous terrorists, once again highlighting his knack for dramatizing real-life incidents.
