Vishal Furia, hailing from Mumbai, began his cinematic journey after a successful 16-year tenure as a VFX artist . In 2014, he left VFX to pursue filmmaking, choosing horror—a relatively unexplored genre in Marathi and Hindi cinema.
His debut, Lapachhapi (2017), a Marathi rural horror rooted in folklore and women’s issues, earned critical acclaim and a Filmfare Marathi nomination for Best Director . He transitioned to Hindi teenage horror with Chhorii (2021), a remake of Lapachhapi, which premiered on Amazon Prime and appealed to a wider audience .
In 2021, he delivered two more horror projects: the Marathi Bali (released on Prime Video) . and the Hindi crime-thriller Forensic (2022), starring Vikrant Massey and Radhika Apte . He also co-directed the web series Bombers (2019) and worked on the acclaimed Criminal Justice (2019) .
Furia is at the helm of Chhorii 2 (2025) on Amazon Prime . and the upcoming theatrical release Maa (June 2025), a mythological horror with Kajol in the lead .He’s heralded by critics and peers for blending atmospheric horror with strong social themes—especially from a female perspective—and is cited as transforming Indian horror.
